After last year's launch of The SAM LGBTQ Comedy Awards, which are back for this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festive, we have this new award for shorts stories of no more than 10,000 words written by an LGBTQ+ person living in Scotland.

There will be 10 cash prizes, 9 awards of £250, and the top prize of £500.

The stories will then be published as a collection

Submissions open on 11 April, the closing date will be July 15.

Competition Rules

  • The competition is open to anyone over 16 years old on 11/4/2022, identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community and lives in Scotland.

  • Entries must be in English.

  • The length is 1,500 to 10,000 words.

  • Double quotation marks should be used for speech and single quotation marks for other appropriate purposes.

  • Entry to the competition are online only, with entrants submitting their story (as a PDF or text document)

  • The closing date is Friday 15th July 2022 and entries will be accepted up to midnight on that date.

  • There are no entry fees but only 1 story per person , if found you have entered more than one, even under a different name you will banned from the competition.

  • All submissions must be made online at mail@scenealba.co.uk

  • All submissions should be the writer’s original work.

  • Copyright remains with the author.

  • The story may not be published elsewhere.

  • The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence can be entered into.

  • Entry implies permission for your story to be published in SAM LGBTQ Short Story Competition Anthology of which up to 5000 copies will published .

Contacting You

  • By entering the competition and providing your details, you are consenting to us contacting you by email, post or phone about the 2022 competition and related events. We may do so to give more information, update you on shortlisted entries, let you know about available training courses, invite you to the November awards ceremony or even let you know if you have been shortlisted.

  • We will ONLY contact you about the SAM LGBTQ Short Story Competition in future years if you specifically agree to us doing so by giving us your consent to do so when entering.

  • We will not share the contact details of entrants with any other organisation without the consent of the entrant.
